The centrally planned, domed synagogue in simplified Romanesque style was widely adopted by Jewish communities after the turn of the century. In Johannesburg, South Africa, the large community erected a new synagogue in 1914 that occupied an entire city block. Designed by Theodore Schaerer in red brick, it has a central plan with a flat dome, a wide, twin-towered entrance with flanking towers, and apse-like projections. The interior is decorated with marble and mosaic.
