Koffiefontein Hebrew Congregation

The last "asset" of this shul was sold in 1963. The only two Jews at that time were Mr Barney Bloch, father of Edmond Bloch and myself, Isaac Karpas. In fact I was only there for about 6 months after my father died in September 1962. The various other assets, Torahs, benches, etc., had been given to other communities. There is a Jewish cemetery in Koffiefontein with about 6 or 7 graves, including that of my grandfather after whom I am named.

Edmond Bloch ebloch@nc.rr.com writes: ...

"My parents were married in this shul in 1922, and I was barmitzvah there in 1936. When my grandfather died in about 1932, we had a minyan every evening for a whole year. The rebbe who made me barmitzvah was also a Bloch, but not related to me."
