South-East London Synagogue

Address:

New Cross Road, New Cross, London SE14 (consecrated March 1905) The synagogue was destroyed by German air raid on 27 December 1940 and the congregation moved temporarily to 117 Lewisham Way, London S.E.14. It returned to original site in 1946, first to a temporary hut and then to new purpose-built synagogue in 1956

Previously (from 1889 to 1905) in Lausanne Road, Peckham, London SE15 and prior to then in various rooms (see below)

Date Formed:

Services started in a house in 452 New Cross Road in 1888, and then moved to two rooms in Nettleton Road, New Cross, followed by a hut in 1889 in Lausanne Road, Peckham.

Closed (1985)

Ashkenazi Orthodox

Affiliation:

An associate synagogue of the United Synagogue from 1902, becoming a district synagogue in 1948.

New Cross and Peckham are districts of southeast London, now respectively within the London Borough of Lewisham and the London Borough of Southwark, Inner London Boroughs created on 1 April 1965, within the administrative area of Greater London.

Previously, New Cross and Peckham were respectively within in the former Metropolitan Borough of Deptford and the former Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell (both established in 1900) within the former County of London (established in 1889), all of which entities were abolished in 1965.
