Cockfosters and North Southgate Synagogue
(Sometimes referred to simply as Southgate Synagogue)

Address:

Old Farm Avenue, Southgate, London N14 5QR. The site was acquired in 1949 and the synagogue was ready for consecration in 1954. By 1959 the building was too small for the growing congregation and it was rebuilt in 1965. In 1978 structural defects caused the roof of the hall to collapse. The building has since been restored.

Members of the congregation also hold services in Cockfosters and in Hadley Wood.

A breakaway from the Palmers Green and Southgate Synagogue. In 1944, Jewish inhabitants of the Oakwood/Cockfosters area began renting "The Hollies", the British Legion Hall, Nursery Road, Southgate, for the holding of services, becoming a separate congregation in 1948.

A affiliated synagogue of the United Synagogue from 1948, becoming a district synagogue in 1952 and later a member (or constituent) synagogue.

Southgate (as well as part of Cockfosters) was previously in the former Municipal Borough of Southgate (incorporated as a borough in 1933) in the former County of Middlesex, both of which entities were abolished in 1965.
