The town of Macclesfield (population about 70,000), in northwestern England lying immediately to the south of Manchester, is situated on the edge of the Peak District, on the river Bollin and the Macclesfield Canal. It was a municipal borough until 1974, when it merged with a number of adjoining authorities, including the Urban District of Wilmslow, to form the district (later borough) of Macclesfield, remaining within the administrative county of Cheshire.
