The 'hit-counter' which appears in the right-hand top corner of
our homepage maintains a running total of the number of visitors
to the web-site homepage since 1st June 1999. It is provided by courtesy
of TheCounter.com. We also receive from TheCounter.com a weekly e-mail report which contains the daily totals for the past seven days.
The hit-counter service also provides statistical data in addition to the number of visitors to this site. The monthly figures suggest that far more people visit the site during the August-January period than February-July.
Visits for days of the week seem fairly evenly distributed although Friday and, not surprisingly, Saturday, are lower than average. The highest hourly rate based upon Greenwich Mean Time is between 7pm and midnight.
The geographical location of visitors can be determined to some extent.
When this web-site's homepage is downloaded into a person's computer, the hit-counter is incremented by requesting the total from 'TheCounter.com. The person's internet service provider's address is known to 'TheCounter.com' because of the request and part of this address, eg. .uk, .za, .com, is used as the domain of the person.

In the adjoining table, the largest three groups could be traced no further than a location somewhere in cyberspace. The remaining data possibly give an indication of the distribution of the South African Jewish diaspora. Further data not shown here includes more than fifty countries and domains whose percentage was smaller than 1.

Amongst browsers used, Internet Explorer 4 and 5 accounted for 63% of all
hits, Netscape 3 and 4 accounted for 33%. Only one Opera browser was logged but eight Mozilla browsers are still in service, somewhere.
In the table below the cumulative total (column 2) is calculated by addition using the weekly total (column 3). There are however some discrepancies between the cumulative totals below and the running totals which appear on the home-page. For the time being the cumulative totals should be regarded as provisional.
TheCounter.com has altered the schedule for the compilation and despatch of data so that the 'safrica' figures are now prepared for the week ending on Wednesday evening and despatched on Thursday. We shall however continue to
use the original arrangement of data for the week ending on Saturday.
