Dear Romania-Moldova Researchers:

We are in the process of revitalizing the Romania-Moldova SIG. In order to do this, the coordinators would greatly appreciate the assistance of our SIG members, many of whom have talents that support our goals.

Please respond to our questionnaire and volunteer for assisting our project aims if you can. To paraphrase America’s President Kennedy, “Ask not only what the Romania-Moldova SIG can do for you; ask also what you can do for the Romania-Moldova SIG.”

We invite you to fill out the form Romania-Moldova SIG Survey. To fill it out, visit:

Thanks for your interest and insights.

Welcome to the Romania-Moldova SIG, a special interest group founded in 1993, and now hosted by JewishGen.

The countries known today as Romania and Moldova, as well as the southwestern portion of Ukraine and Southern Hungary are the areas of interest to us. Included in these countries are the areas formerly known as Bukovina, Moldavia, Bessarabia, Transylvania, Wallachia and The Banat.

By combining our resources of time, expertise and funds we hope to be able to aid Jewish genealogy researchers with an interest in this region. To assist in achieving this goal we have established an Online Discussion List, a mailing list which is intended to facilitate the timely exchange of information among SIG members. There is no charge for participation in the mailing list. Reading the messages may enable you to discover another user who has uncovered a piece of information vital to your research, or who is linked to a family or town that you are also researching. You should be able to find users eager to share their information and quick to provide tips and feedback. The mailing list archive is fully searchable on JewishGen.

We are actively pursuing new sources of information, as well as beginning the process of entering materials that we have been acquiring into a searchable database for the new All-Romanian database on JewishGen. You will be able to link directly to it from the Romania-Moldova SIG home page. We strongly urge you to go to the JewishGen Family Finder site to register the names and towns you are researching. This will provide you with an unparalleled opportunity for contact with other researchers who have an interest in those same names and places. You are free to select your preferred level of personal privacy on that site and decide the method by which you prefer to be contacted by other researchers. We also encourage you to submit your family trees to the Family Tree of the Jewish People.

Since we all benefit from the efforts of the JewishGen organization, and the free services it provides, we also strongly encourage our SIG members to make donations to JewishGen-erosity, and if you desire, for specially earmarked Romania-Moldova SIG projects.
