Gennady Kofman, Chair of the Panevezys Jewish community, has organized a memorial to the Jews buried in the old Jewish cemetery in Panevezys.
The agenda features showing of a movie made in 1932 by an American who went back to Ponevezh Russia (Panevezys Lithuania) to visit his family and see his hometown. This movie is accompanied with a short narration and music.
The movie is fascinating and deeply moving:
* It contains original movie footage of parts of the city, The Beis Yaakov School, The Ponevezh Yeshiva and The Ponivezer Rav - Rav Joseph Kahanaman teaching the students of the Yeshiva. There are also pictures of two other heads of yeshivas there - Rabbi Tsfasman and Rabbi Baron.
* At one point, we see coming out of the Yeshiva one by one, or two by two, about forty different people, many of whom are certainly identifiable.
* There are street scenes of what Jewish Ponevezh used to look like - including the houses and synagogues - and "beautiful downtown Ponevezh."
