LitvakSIG Board
Meeting October 14, 2007 Minutes Present: Gene Alpert, Judy Baston, Rose Cohen, David Hoffman, Eden Joachim, Howard Margol, Aaron Roetenberg, Olga Zabludoff. Absent Mike Posnick. 1. Financial report – Eden Joachim
There was an extended discussion of the LitvakSIG general fund used for ongoing expenses such as website, insurance, mail, teleconferencing, and travel for archivists to annual conferences, etc. All dues and general contributions that are not earmarked for research go into this General Administrative fund. As of today, we have 371 paid members. Total contributions and dues since the July 1 are $15,202.00. 2. Secretary's Report – David Hoffman Minutes for the July 3 and September 1 Board meeting to go on the web were approved. 3. Bylaws Committee – David Hoffman The one Bylaw passed in 2006 and the four Bylaws passed in 2007 have been integrated into the Bylaws as they appear on our website. I have asked each Board member to review the revised Bylaws and indicate any confusion of apparent contradiction. These and any other concerns should be shared with the Bylaws committee, including the possibility of rewriting (or” restating”) the entire set of Bylaws. 4. Rose Leher Cohen's proposal for a One-Day LitvakSIG Seminar in Israel Since Rose knew that she would be unavailable for this meeting, we had agreed that it be discussed by email and at the teleconference meeting. Progress is being made. While everyone wanted more concrete information, the Board was enthusiastic about the idea of a one day seminar. 5. LitvakSIG Website – David Hoffman's report We are in a process of revising the basic template for the LitvakSIG website. There was consensus that the Board likes the basic design and we should move ahead with the transition. Don London is taking responsibility for the new template, while Dave Lewak is continuing as the webmaster. We discussed the issue of “Research Groups” on the website. There should be some effort to develop a “one stop shop” for a town: the district and guberniya it belongs to, and the contact people for various projects associated with the town. When possible, the page will list what records (surnames, dates) are available, the funding needs for each project. Some of the concepts, like district vs. shtetl records, are not meaningful for beginning researchers. Many features of our existing website are good and these will be preserved or only minimally improved or updated, or rearranged so they're more easily found. We will link to many of the excellent Infofiles on JewishGen, our many articles in our Online Journal, and through our links, to many sites which are rich in content. 6. Ideas of how to find help for Olga Various ideas were discussed about easing the organizational burden for the Coordinator of District Research Groups and ways this position can be divided in the future. 7. Message from Carole Montello Anybody who wants to give a lecture dealing with Litvak subjects should send it to her before the call for papers, and she'll give them extra consideration. 8. Olga: Preliminary report on contributions and fundraising policies The subcommittee has been holding a very active dialogue, with a number of meetings, and a big document has been developed. The District Coordinators have been polled on issues that affect them. Olga wrote to Joel and Aaron on regard to issues concerning vital records. There will be a little more discussion with consideration of their input and a few more questions for the committee to look at and then will be prepared to offer a document with recommendations. David complimented Howard for running an excellent meeting. Respectfully submitted, David Hoffman
