Project Name. Translation of the “Miechov Memorial Book”

Project Leader
William D. Cherny

JewishGen Yizkor Book Project Manager: Lance Ackerfeld

Project Synopsis

This project is initiated in order to fund the translation into English the 314 page “Miechov Memorial Book” published in 1971 in Tel-Aviv by the editors of the book at Nachman Blumental and Avia Ben-Azar (Broshy). The book is written in Hebrew and Yiddish. The goal is to provide a complete translation of this book to JewishGen. There is an English forward to the book that describes the Jewish presence in Miechow from the 1860s through the German occupation in World War II.

Key Audiences

Jewish genealogists and decedents of the Jewish inhabitants seeking to trace their roots in Miechow and the surrounding area constitute the primary audience for the material. However, the material has the potential to be of broader appeal to scholars interested in the lives of the Jews, their development, economically and culturally in this region.

Project Importance

Yizkor books are unique sources of information on once vibrant towns, primarily in Central and Eastern Europe, whose Jewish populations were destroyed in the Holocaust. Written after World War II by emigres and Holocaust survivors, Yizkor books contain narratives of the history of the town, detail of daily life, religious and political figures and movements, religious and secular education, and gripping stories of the major intellectual and Zionist movements of the 20th century. The necrologies and lists of residents are of tremendous genealogical value, as often the names of individuals who were taken to extermination camps or shot in the forests are not recorded elsewhere.

This project will result in the creation of primary English source of information for anyone doing research on Miechow and its Jewish community. The book contains numerous pictures of former residents with captions.

The resulting translations will be posted, as they are completed, on Yizkor Book Translations site at JewishGen at: http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/miechow/miechow.html
