Project Synopsis
Color photographs of the 1795 Ostrog Census cover the listings of the town's Jewish households. The listings are both in Polish and in Russian. These will be translated into English and then the data will be entered into a JewishGen spreadsheet template which will become available to contributors well before posting on the JewishGen Ukraine Database
Key Audiences
The key audience for this project is people whose ancestors lived in Ostrog.
Project Importance
At the time of this census, only 2 years after Ostrog was transferred from Poland to Russia, the town's Jewish community was large and important. Moreover, Ostrog was home to a number of famous disciples of the Baal Shem Tov and well as descendants of other famous rabbis.
This project will make it possible to learn the names and occupations of the Jews of Ostrog.
Project Description
A trilingual translator will extract data from the original records, translate them into English, and enter the data into a spreadsheet template provided by JewishGen. Once those tasks are complete, JewishGen will integrate the new data into the JewishGen Ukraine Database
Estimated Cost
$1300
