There are 48 films with Jewish vital records for Warsaw microfilmed by the LDS (Mormons). Realizing the enormous value of these records to researchers, the Douglas E. Goldman Jewish Genealogy Center in Israel undertook a project to extract these records in English onto large ledger sheets. Over the past two years, an International group of dedicated volunteers, including Daniel Wagner, Hadassah Lipsius, Judie Ostroff-Goldstein, Osnat Ramaty, Nicole Berline, Harriett Brown, Mirta Yuni, Barbara Khait, Olga Parker, and Craig Hillman, have entered the handwritten details into a database.
Because of the sheer size of this initiative, the work has been divided into four phases. Details of the completed indexes can be found on our Warsaw LDS Inventory page.
As of January 2000, with the completion of Phase III, over 9200 birth, marriage, divorce and death records have now been added to the JRI-Poland database, and can be searched on-line. You will also find more information than you have previously come to expect from a JRI-Poland search. In addition to the usual fields, the birth indices include parent ages, mother's name, mother's patronymic, and mother's maiden name, when this information was found in the record. The city district will also be noted. See district information and maps.
Keep checking JRI-Poland for updates. We can always use more volunteers--just contact coordinator Hadassah Lipsius to find out what's involved.
