Polish State Archives Jewish Records Indexing - Poland Ronald S. Lauder Foundation
Genealogy Project at the
Jewish Historical Institute, Warsaw

Indices to Jewish birth, marriage and death records
of the City of Warsaw

Jewish Record Indexing-Poland has acquired indices to almost 17,000 Jewish birth, marriage and death records for the City of Warsaw from 1869 to 1898 (see table below). The records have been indexed by the staff of the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation Genealogy Project at the Jewish Historical Institute, from registers in the Warsaw Region Branch. These records are not available on Mormon microfilms. This is the first phase of the Warsaw City project, which JRI-Poland estimates will cover approximately 40,000 records.

JRI-Poland is proud of its expanded relationship with the Lauder Foundation Genealogy Project team. The City of Warsaw indexing project is just the beginning of a heightened efforts to bring material of genealogical value from the Jewish Historical Institute to Jewish researchers around the world.

For the City of Warsaw project, Piotr Rytka-Zandberg (of the Lauder Foundation Genealogy Project) is filling the role typically handled by JRI-Poland's professional data entry personnel in Poland.

Like many philanthropic foundations with far-reaching goals and widespread activities, the efforts of the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation are strengthened by groups partnering in their initiatives. The joint efforts of JRI-Poland and the Lauder Foundation will enable us to index many of the Jewish Historical Institute holdings of genealogical value.

JRI-Poland's goal for the entire Warsaw project is to raise $5,000 for the Lauder Foundation Genealogy Project. $2000 was raised and donated for Phase 1 and work has now started on the second phase. Every Jewish genealogist with ties to Warsaw itself and the greater Warsaw region is urged to be generous in support of the project. Phase 2 data will be released to the JRI-Poland database in accordance with funding received.

After the indices are posted to JRI-Poland’s searchable database, researchers are able to order copies of the original records directly from the Polish State Archives (using the convenient instructions linked to the search results). You may also access a listing of all Warsaw surnames found in the PSA records.

Notes:

Not all the post-1867 records for every year, district and type have survived. However, all available records will ultimately be indexed in the next phases of this initiative. It is currently estimated that there are more than 40,000 surviving records from 1867 to 1899.

For information on indices to records prior to 1867 (microfilmed by the Mormons), please refer to the Warsaw Shtetl CO-OP project on the JRI-Poland Shtetl CO-OP page.
