Jewish Records Indexing – Poland is a prime example of the power of cooperative effort by volunteers and researcher with a common interest. JRI-Poland's success to date is due to the boundless energy and dedication of genealogists around the world.

While JRI-Poland is volunteer-managed, funds are needed to cover the costs of our increasing scope of activities. Your valuable contributions will enable JRI-Poland to:

  • Expedite the work of the Shtetl CO-OP initiative.
  • Support the work of professional translators in translating/transliterating records from the more difficult Russian language years (for which qualified volunteers are not available).
  • Help build the database of records for more Shtetls and for more years.
  • Index the records for your town in the Polish State Archives (not on microfilm).

Important tax benefit notice to Canadian Contributors

Jewish Records Indexing-Poland and the Jewish Genealogical Society of Canada (Toronto) have reached a milestone agreement under which Canadian contributors to JRI-Poland projects will be able to obtain a Canadian tax receipt.

On behalf of the board and all JRI-Poland researchers, we sincerely thank the members of the Toronto society for making it possible for Canadian researchers to obtain this tax benefit and for enabling you to make your JRI-Poland donations in Canadian Dollars.

This new agreement is an extension of the long-standing and successful relationship between the Jewish Genealogical Society of Canada (Toronto) and JRI-Poland.  The JGS Canada has operated the JRI-Poland/Toronto JGS Copy Service since 1998.  JGS Canada volunteers make photocopies of index pages from LDS microfilms using the modern equipment at the Toronto Reference Library.  For more information on this project, go to www.jri-poland.org/toronto.htm

Surviving records less than 100 years old are held in the Civil Records Offices (Urzad Stanu Cywilnego) of each town.
For information on the 20th century records available for your town, visit the Routes to Roots Foundation website, click on "ARCHIVE DATABASE" and then "Search DataBase" and enter the town name. Look for the town name in the Repository/City column of the search results. There are typically links to lists of available births, marriage and death records for the town.
Note, however, the Routes to Roots Foundation database may indicate turn of the century records that have already been transferred to the appropriate branch of the Polish State Archives where they can be indexed for the JRI-Poland database.
