Indices for previously unavailable records
The goal of the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland milestone
agreement with the Polish State Archives is to index all Jewish vital
records more than 100 years old in the Polish State Archives that are not
included in the microfilm collection of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints (the Mormons). Copies of these records are available
from the Polish State Archives.

Polish State Archives (PSA) project:
Indexing is proceeding on an archive by archive basis and data entry is
now almost complete for the many towns with Jewish vital records in the Siedlce
branch of the Polish State Archives.
As the fundraising target is reached for each town, the data is
processed and the information from the indices will become available
on-line. See the Project
Status Page for the current fundraising status for the towns in
the Siedlce project.
The Unique Jewish Vital Records
of Wegrów
Until 1825, Jewish births, marriages and deaths in the
Kingdom
of
Poland
were registered in the civil transcripts.
These records were typically patronymic
with few surnames. Starting
in 1826, the registrations of Jewish births, marriages and deaths were
kept separately and surnames were included in the records of virtually all
of the many hundreds of towns.
These registers generally have yearly indices, listed by surname.
Among the hundreds of towns in
Poland
for which there are Jewish vital records, Wegrów
is the only one in which the annual indices, starting in 1826,do
not contain surnames. While
the actual birth, marriage, and death records include the family names,
these surnames were not included in the birth indices until 1872 and death
indices until 1856. Surnames
in Marriage indices were sporadic until 1856.
Without surnames, it is impossible to add the indices to the JRI-Poland
database. As a result, two
special initiatives are underway to extract more than 20,000 missing
surnames from the Wegrów records and add them
to the indices.

Surnames are being
inserted into the database using graphic images on CD provided by the LDS.

carried out by archivists in the Siedlce
