Notes:
The Lodz project was jump-started for a special reason. Last September, we learned of the plight of Dr. Jeffrey Bornstein who is suffering from Leukemia and in urgent need of a bone-marrow match. We needed the late 19th century Lodz indices to help Jeffrey reconstruct his paternal family tree with the hope of finding a match among distant relatives. The Polish State Archives immediately swung into action and quickly photocopied the index pages. As soon as these 44,000 indices were data entered, they were made available to the family.
Through the tenacity and perserverance of Shirley Flaum of Houston, who wears the hat of both Lodz Archive Coordinator and Lodz Town Leader, more than $7000 was raised from dedicated Lodz researchers to pay for the indexing.
But, even before we started on the Lodz records in Poland, Morris Wirth and his dedicated Shtetl CO-OP volunteers had already indexed 22,000 pre-1869 records in the LDS films. So, we can now say with great pride…that all available Lodz records have been indexed.
