Hal Bookbinder Bio

A former president of the Jewish Genealogy Society, Los Angeles (JGSLA) and the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS), Hal currently serves on the JewishGen Board of Governors, the JewishGen Ukraine SIG Board of Directors and the JGSLA Board of Directors. He has served in a leadership role for nine IAJGS international conferences including his most recent stint as lead co-chair for the 2014 conference in Salt Lake City. Hal has published numerous articles on research techniques, Jewish history, border changes and safe computing. He presented at the 2013 NGS conference as well as at most of the recent IAJGS conferences. He has made presentations to various genealogical societies across the U.S. online from his offices in Los Angeles. In 2010, he was honored with the IAJGS Lifetime Achievement Award. Hal has identified over 3,500 relatives in 26 states and 8 countries. He traces his and his wife’s roots to modern western Ukraine and adjacent areas of Moldova, Poland, Belarus and Russia. He and his wife Marci, children and grandchildren all live in Southern California where he directs information technology for UCLA Health, teaches for the University of Phoenix and directs a job skills program for individuals in recovery at the LA Midnight Mission.
