BIRMINGHAM

School:

The Hebrew National Schoolii.

Number of Pupils:

Public: 58 males and 36 females

Hours of Instruction:

In summer 32 and in winter 31.

Subjects of Instruction:

Hebrew:
Reading, Translation of Tefillah, Translation of Chumash, Translation of Nach, Grammar, Writing, Latin, French, Geography, History, Arithmetic, Book-keeping, Bible History, English Grammar, English Writing, English Composition.

Books Used:

Elementary Class:
Tefillah, Lyon's Grammar, Mayor and Carpenter's Abridged Grammar. -

Second Class:
Tefillah, Chumash, Lyon's Grammar, Crossley's Class Book, Murray's Grammar, Bible, Bonnycastle's Arithmetic.

First Class:
Tenach, Newman's Grammar, Nordheim's Grammar,. Latin: Eton Grammar, Telemachus.
English: Murray's Grammar. Goldsmith's History of England, Goldsmith's History of Rome, Goldsmith's History of Greece, Goldsmith's Geography. Keith's Arithmetic, Smith's Book-keeping. Kitto's Bible History, Dr. Raphael's Testaments of the Lord.

Names of Teachers:

Headmaster: Dr. Raphael, £180 p.a.
Latin and English: J. Jelly, £80 p.a.
Junior Class: Revd. L. Chapman, £60 p.a.
French and Hebrew: Dr. M. Kohnstam, £80 p.a.

Payment of Pupils:

Boys: 1/- per week. Girls: 6d. per week.

Other Remarks:

The funds of the Congregation are raised by assessment. The Congregation is governed by baalei batim who annually appoint a President, Treasurer and Committee of 5, of which outgoing Parnas and Gabai are ex officio members. The school is governed by the subscribers who appoint a Committee of 13 gents who chose their own President, Treasurer and Secretary. Committee is chosen for 2 years, 6 members retiring annually. The Chevra is governed by the subscribers who annually appoint a President, Treasurer, Secretary and Committee of 10 members.

 

BRIGHTON.

School:

There is no school.

Number of Pupils:

Private:4

Hours of Instruction:

Private:6

Subjects of Instruction:

Translation of Chumash, Hebrew Grammar, Reading and the elements of the Jewish faith.

Books Used:

Chumashim, Tefillot, Dikduk

Name of Teacher:

M. B. Levyiii.

Other Remarks:

The children do not regularly attend their instruction.

 

BRISTOL

 

School:

There is no school.iv. The children of the more affluent part of the Community are sent to Hebrew Boarding Schools, and others are taught by the Shamas and Chazan, as far as relates to Hebrew. And as to other Branches of Education, by English Schools or Teachers in the locality.

  5. This was not a seperate item in the transcription made by Rabbi Susser, but was in each case included under "Other Remarks". Chief Rabbi Adler himself adding certain comments in his own handwriting, including noting down the names of parents who had children of school age in small communities.

  6. Mr. Benjamin was the Shammas and Shochet in Bristol.

  7. The Shochet in Canterbury was Mr. Juda Isaacs. 

  8. Mr. Phillips was the Shochet in Chatham.

  9. Mr. Pulver was the Chazan and Shochet in Cheltenham.
