The Beth Hamedrash

Functions:

The Beth Hamedrash is a "house of learning." 

After an earlier abortive attempt in 1704, the three City Ashkenazi Synagogues (the Great, the Hambro' and the New) established a Beth Hamedrash some time prior to 1782 in a house in Brookers Garden, for use by members of all three congregations.

The functions of this Beth Hamedrash was (1) a synagogue; (2) a court of Jewish religious law; (3) a library; and (4) a place of study.

Brookers Garden (later known as Sussex Place), near Leadenhall Street, London EC3.

from c.1841 to 1876
1 Smiths Buildings, Leadenhall Street, London EC3.

from 1876 to 1905
Duke's Place (adjacent to the Great Synagogue), London EC3.

from 1905 to 1940
Mulberry Street, Commercial Road, London E1 (adjacent to the new Hambro' Synagogue) (building damaged in German air raid in 1940)

Thereafter the Beth Hamedrash sat at the offices of the United Synagogue:

from 1948 to 1958
Adler House, Adler Street, London E1

from 1958 to 1996
Woburn House, Upper Woburn Street, WC1

since 1996
Adler House, High Road/Ballards Lane, North Finchley, London N12

Date Found:

At least 1782.

Current Status:

Still in existence within the head offices of the United Synagogue, but a shadow of its former self - the library was auctioned off.

Ashkenazi Orthodox

Affiliation:

Taken over by the United Synagogue in 1875. 

Local Government Districts(i):

All addresses until 1905 were in the City of London.

Mulberry Street and Adler Street (formerly Union Street) are now in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and were, until 1965, in the former Metropolitan Borough of Stepney within the former County of London.

Upper Woburn Street is now in the London Borough of Camden and was, until 1965, in  the former Metropolitan Borough of St. Pancras within the former County of London.

High Road and Ballards Lane, N12 are in the London Borough of Barnet.
