Bridgend Jewish CommunitiesTowns of Brigend and Porthcawl The county borough of Bridgend (in Welsh - Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr) in South Wales, with a population of about 135,000, was formed in 1996 from most of the former district of Ogwr, in the then county of Mid Glamorgan. The district of Ogwr had been formed in 1974 on the merger of a number of local authorities in Glamorganshire, including the urban districts of Bridgend and Porthcawl. The town of Bridgend, with a population of about 40,000, lies on both banks of the river Ogmore and is about half way between Cardiff and Swansea. The seaside town of Porthcawl to the southeast, with a population of about 16,000, is situated on the north coast of the Bristol Channel.
