Current Status:

In about 1980(iii) the Congregation closed the Chrisian Street Synagogue and relocated to Commercial Road Talmud Torah Synagogue in Stamford Hill (listed separately), now closed.

Affiliation:

The Congregation had from time to time been affiliated to Federation of Synagogues, including from at least 1915 until at least 1930(iv), and again from at least 1970 continuing until after its relocation to Stamford Hill(v) . At other times it was listed in the Jewish Year Books solely under "Educational Organisations"

Local Government Districts:

Christian Street is now in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets(vii) and was previously (from 1900 to 1965) in the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney. From 1856 to 1900, the Vestry (council) of the Parish of St George in the East (in which Christian Street was siituated) was a local authority, with functions similar to that of a local government district council.

  • (i) Christian Street, in London's East End, runs south, for about a quarter of a mile, from Commercial Road (A13) to Cable Street. It lies about 600 feet to the east of Canon Street Road.

  • (ii) Stated in Jewish Year Books from at least the 1930s.

  • (iii) The Congregation was listed for the first time with the Stamford Hill address in the Jewish Year Book 1981.

  • (iv) Listed as such in Jewish Year Books from at least 1916 (when it is referred to as the Christian Street Synagogue) until at least 1930.

  • (v) Listed as such in Jewish Year Books from at least 1971 until 2007.

  • (vi) Jewish Year Book 1916.

  • (vii) The London Borough of Tower Hamlets, which covers much of the traditional London East End, was created on 1 April 1965 upon the merger of the former Metropolitan Boroughs of Stepney, Bethnal Green and Poplar. These had been within the (then abolished) County of London, created in 1899 and, prior to then, the areas had been within the former county of Middlesex.
