Barking Hebrew Congregation

Address:

9 Heath Street (now known as St. Paul's Road), Barking, Essex, until 1939, when the building was sold as part of a redevelopment scheme.(i)

Subsequently until the 1949 merger (see below), the Congregation held services in various temporary buildings, including Faircross School, Hulse Avenue, Barking.(ii)

Date Founded:

The Synagogue was constructed in 1926.(iii)

Current Status:

Merged in 1949 with the Becontree and District Associate Synagogue to form the The Barking and Becontree Affiliated Synagogue.(iv)

Ritual:

Ashkenazi Orthodox

Affiliation:

Initially unaffiliate, but linked to the United Synagogue for burial rights.(v) In 1947, the Congregation became an Affiliated Synagogue of the United Synagogues, until the 1949 merger.(vi)

Local Government District:

The suburb of Barking is in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (known as the London Borough of Barking until 1980). It was previously (until 1965) in the former Municipal Borough of Barking (which was the Urban District of Barking Town until 1931).(xi)

  • (ii) The Jewish Year Book 1949 refers to this as the temporary address of the Congregation. The Congregation was not listed in the Jewish Year Book 1947.

  • (xi) The London Borough of Barking, an Outer London Borough within the Greater London administrative area, was created on 1 April 1965 upon the merger of almost all the Municipal Borough of Barking with the greater part of the Municipal Borough of Dagenham. Both areas had then been part of the County of Essex.

  • (xii) The former Registration District was Romford, from the formation of Congregation until 1 April 1965. All registers would now be held by current register office.
