Early Jewish Residents of Worksop

The first record found of a Jewish resident of Worksop was Marcus Apple in 1881 aged 70. A Tobacconist, living at 5 Bridge Street. [1881 Census - RG12/3305 folio 4 page 1]. He was also in Worksop at the 1891 Census and died in the second (April to June) quarter of 1898 aged 86, registered in Sheffield 9c 284.

The first record of a Jewish family in Worksop was that of Maurice Marks, who also appeared in the census for 1881 as well as for 1891. His six younger children were born in Worksop between 1883 and 1890, and he had three older children, born in Sheffield.

At the 1901 Census, there were these families in Worksop with the following Heads:
Samuel Goorney
Solomon Golberg (sic)
Reuben L. SIlverman
Harris Finestone
Annie Goodman (whose husband, Myer Goodman, died 1898)
Maurice Marks
There was also Morris Blumberge, a lodger in a public house. He was a hawker.
