Burnley

The town of Burnley,  in North West England, with a population of about 75,000, forms the greater part of the district and borough of Burnley.  The present boundaries date from 1974, when the county borough of Burnley merged with adjoining areas to form a district of the county of Lancashire.

Only one Jewish congregation, the Burnley Synagogue, is known to have existed in Burnley.

Address: 20 Sandy Gate, Burnley
Current Status: Closed about 1934.
Date Formed: The synagogue at 20 Sandy Gate, consecrated on 25 August 1895, was reputedly the private property of the then vice-president of the congregation, Mr. S. Shabbatt, supported by voluntary contributions.  The Congregation was formally established in 1906, although it is uncertain whether it continued to use the Sandy Road property, or elsewhere
