The District of Thanet
Thanet, a local government district of the county of Kent in southeast England, was formed in 1974 by the merger of the municipal boroughs of Margate (population about 57,000) and Ramsgate (population about 38,000), together with adjoining areas. Both Margate and Ramsgate are coastal resorts, on the English Channel. Thanet covers an area known as the Isle of Thanet, which, although originally separated from the Kent mainland by the Wantsum Channel, is now practically joined to the mainland as a result of the build up of silt and shingle.
