Goldman Jewish Genealogy Center is one of the most dynamic departments of Beth Hatefutsoth, the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora in Tel Aviv, Israel and the only Jewish genealogy center of its kind in the world. The Genealogy Center receives family trees from Jewish families the world over, records and preserves them in a computerized database, helps the public to find links with other family trees and informs and encourages on how to build your own family tree. Beth Hatefutsoth, the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora in Tel Aviv, is actively documenting and researching Jewish communities, past and present. The Museum's goal is to gather and create visual and written documentation to preserve Jewish heritage. As an institution, the Genealogy Center provides the genealogist with the opportunity to record his/her life's work for safekeeping, with the assurance that it will be preserved and made available to future generations. The development and continuity of the Genealogy Center is of vital importance to all those who feel that Jewish genealogy is not just a hobby, but the means to an end - the preservation of Jewish family heritage for posterity. The Genealogy Center also provides Jewish genealogists with a new and exciting resource- the public at large. Hundreds of visitors come to the Genealogy Center daily to search for information on their families and record their own family trees. Thousands of inquiries are also received by mail, fax, e-mail and through the Beth Hatefutsoth website. Once your family tree is recorded, someone may find you and provide you with new information, perhaps even the missing link you have been searching for for years! The Genealogy Center's database is one of several historical and cultural databases in Beth Hatefutsoth which can be of interest to Jewish genealogists. The others include: the history of Jewish communities, the origin of Jewish family names, the Feher Jewish Music Center and the Visual Documentation Center. Beth Hatefutsoth is planning to incorporate these databases as well as our permanent and temporary collections into a World Jewish Learning Center which will be the 'super' application of a new, unified multimedia information system created at the Museum. The primary purpose of linking this vast array of information into a cohesive, unified system is to enable output to users in an optimized manner from various on-site and remote sources, as well as to enable a more efficient system for researchers.
