From: "henry wellisch" To: Subject: Hungarian Holocaust Victims Date: Thursday, August 30, 2001 11:01 AM Dear Marc: I am enclosing a list of 485 Hungarian Jewish Holocaust victims. Please note the list is in EXCEL format. Please let me know if this is OK for the H-SIG website. I suggest that the following note should go with this: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I came across this list in a German language book entitled: Die Erinnerung Tut Weh - Judisches Leben und Antisemitismus im Walviertel (The Recollection Hurts - Jewish Life and Antisemitism in the Waldviertel). The Walviertel is a district in Lower Austria near the Czech border. The book describes in some detail the fate of 1700 Hungarian Jews who arrived in the town of GMUND on Dec 22, 1944. They were kept there in a grain silo under pretty terrible conditions until Feb.16, 1945 when they were transported to Theresienstadt. I am not familiar with the eventual fate of this transport. During the period in GMUND no fewer than 485 died and with German efficiency the names of all the deceased were recorded in the local Standesamt (registry office). The afore mentioned book lists the names of the deceased only, including hometown (mostly Budapest), profession, date of birth, date of death and cause of death. Henry Wellisch
