H-SIG
Shtetl Cross Reference Guide
As always, thanks to all of you for your wonderful support of the All
Hungary Database. We are asking your participation in the the
creation of a town cross reference guide for the entire H-SIG area
(pre-Trianon Hungary). The purpose of the project is to provide a
central source of information regarding the names and locations of
towns, districts and megyes for use in genealogical research and
improved search capabilities of the All Hungary Database.
Our goal is to provide a working draft of the cross reference guide in
February 2005. We are asking all H-SIG members to consider
submitting information about their ancestral towns. We are
looking for the following information:
1. Hungarian Town Name Pre-Trianon
2. District (jaras) pre-Trianon
3. County (megye) pre-Trianon
4. Current Town Name
5. Current County or equivalent (for example, the kraj in Slovakia)
6. Optional - Current district or equivalent (for example, the
okres in Slovakia)
7. Current Country
8. Longitude and Latitude
9. German Name (if available)
10. Other Names (if available)
11. Comments
Accuracy is critical to this
project. We prefer you to submit the information in the Excel
template
below. Alternatively, you can send the information in a Word
table or in an e-mail. Do
include diacritical marks. If you don't know and/or cannot
find the equivalent
of the megye/county, type "don't know". in that cell. Enter Royal
Free Town in the cell for jaras if applicable.
To avoid working on towns that have already been completed, please click here
for a list of towns completed during the pilot project in alphabetical
order.
Where can you find this information? To find pre-Trianon
information, there are a number of options including:
1. The 1882 gazetteer online at Radix
2. The 1877 Hungarian Gazetteer (Magyarorszag Helysegnevtar) by Janos
Svorzsak, available on microfiche at the FHL. Fiche # 6000840
3. Maps such as those found at this link.
3. Google
To find modern information, use Google, the JewishGen
ShtetlSeeker and/or maps.
