WELCOME TO THE GESHER GALICIA SIG DISCUSSION GROUP!

Please print, read, and save this message for future reference.

With this e-mail, you are now subscribed and able to participate in the electronic mailing list discussion group of the Gesher Galicia Special Interest Group for those interested in researching their Jewish roots in the former Austro-Hungarian province of Galicia.

I. ABOUT US

  • Gesher Galicia, founded in 1993 by Suzan Wynne, has over 600 active members worldwide. The SIG publishes a quarterly journal, The Galitzianer, and the annual Gesher Galicia Family Finder, which focuses on Galician towns and surnames listed by SIG members, and maintains its own web site.
  • Dues paying members of Gesher Galicia receive The Galitzianer and Gesher Galicia Family Finder by postal mail. We now offer members the option to receive The Galitzianer electronically in a PDF file sent by e-mail. Contact Edward Goldstein.
  • We also offer the option for dues payment electronically via PayPal, a secure international on-line payment service.
  • Access to our web site and participation in our electronic mailing list discussion group is free and open to those interested in Jewish family research in Galicia.

II. MISSION STATEMENT AND GOALS

Gesher Galicia is an organization that promotes Jewish genealogical and historical research in Galicia, a province of the former Austrian Empire. Its goals are to promote a forum for researchers to share information and to promote individual and group research of Galicia.

III. INFO FILE

Visit our website About Gesher Galicia web page which describes our SIG and gives a brief history and geographical description of Galicia, and to obtain our membership form.

IV. GOALS OF GALICIA SIG

  • Bring together Jewish family researchers with common interest in Galicia
  • Provide a forum for researchers to share information about research methods, data, Yizkor books, etc. in Galicia
  • Develop a searchable database of names from data extracted from material located in the LDS Family History Library, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and other repositories.
  • Encourage SIG members to form Town Research Groups
  • Encourage SIG members to be Town Historians / liaisons to JGS groups
  • Encourage SIG members to create web pages for their Galician towns
  • Encourage SIG members to submit their family trees to The Family Tree of the Jewish People.
  • Encourage SIG members to translate parts of Yizkor books and submit their translations to the Yizkor Book Project.
  • Raise money through donations to complete research projects, including:
    • Translate Yizkor books of Galician towns of interest.
    • Translate indexes of LDS microfilms for relevant towns
    • Create indexes of vital (and other) records for towns of interest
    • Translate information from other sources, including Holocaust-related
    • Obtain and index / translate business directories for areas of interest.

V. WEB SITE

The Gesher Galicia web site is located at http://www.jewishgen.org/Galicia/
  • Here you will find several sections, including ABOUT GG, CONTACT US, JOIN GG, NEWSLETTER, RESEARCH, and LIFE IN GALICIA. On our Newsletter page, you will find the Tables of Contents of all issues of our published Galitzianer newsletters (1993-present), and a searchable database of surnames listed in articles in many those issues.
  • In addition, on our TOWNS page, we list research groups and town historians for specific towns and regions, we link to the ShtetLinks directory of Galician towns now in Poland or Ukraine, and we have revised our Holocaust Research section, with links to Yizkor books written about Galician towns.
  • There are many links to other websites of interest to Galician research: towns, maps, JewishGen, Jewish Records Indexing-Poland (JRI Poland), PolishRoots, Polish Genealogical Society of America (PGSA), Federation of Eastern European Family History Societies (FEEFHS), for example.
  • We will provide a link to personal family web pages of current dues-paying members of Gesher Galicia. We welcome your suggestions for other web sites to link to us. Send the URL and a brief description of the site for consideration to Shelley Pollero.

VI. DUES FOR GESHER GALICIA

The annual membership dues to Gesher Galicia provide for the costs of its publications, mailings, and necessary administrative functions. Information and directions for using our online payment service, PayPal, are on our web site.

VII. CONTRIBUTIONS TO JEWISH GEN

  • DESIGNATED CONTRIBUTIONS TO GESHER GALICIA
    • In our relationship with JewishGen, we have extended to our members and participants the opportunity to make generous donations to JewishGen and to specify that this money is earmarked for the use by Gesher Galicia for related research projects.
    • In addition, members who can benefit from special Galicia translation and indexing projects should help defray the expenses of these efforts by donating to these Galicia JewishGen-erosity Projects. Go to www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/Galicia.html.
  • UNDESIGNATED CONTRIBUTIONS TO JEWISHGEN
    • JewishGen has able to provide administrative assistance, as well as a home for the Gesher Galicia SIG list server (online discussion group), our Gesher Galicia web site, and for our future searchable databases. However, JewishGen has had to so greatly expand the amount of space and equipment needed to support its operation that it needs our financial support immediately in order to continue serving us.
    • We all benefit from the efforts of the JewishGen organization and the services it provides. Therefore, we strongly encourage each one of our members and participants to make undesignated donations to JewishGen in addition to the donations to Gesher Galicia as mentioned above.
    • JewishGen is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 corporation. Contributions to JewishGen are tax-deductible in the U.S. according to law for both designated (Gesher Galicia) and undesignated (JewishGen) donations.
    • We look forward to your participation in our online discussion group, and hope that our cooperative and reciprocal communication will benefit all who are researching their Jewish roots in Galicia.
