JewishGen Danzig/Gdańsk SIG Project:
Archives of the Jewish Community of Danzig at the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People (CAHJP), Jerusalem

Fundraising: First group of files fully funded at cost of $438. Funding of $2000 received from GerSIG to order additional files! Despite its generosity, this grant will not cover all of the files of genealogical interest, so we still need your donations. Please contribute at

Indexing: First group of files received from CAHJP; files Da/286, Da/685, Da/754, Da/1598 indexed and searchable at JewishGen's Germany and Poland Databases (see introduction); remaining files not completely proofread. We need volunteer proofreaders, Hebrew and German. Data will not go online until proofread. Contact the Project Coordinator to participate.

We are fundraising for a project to make available online genealogical information from the Archives of the Jewish Community of Danzig at the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People (CAHJP) in Jerusalem. This massive collection of documents (about 2000 files, some consisting of hundreds of pages) was shipped from Danzig to Jerusalem in 1939, and was "the first major community collection to be deposited in the Archives." The rich variety of genealogical and historical information contained in these documents can be glimpsed through the CAHJP's online inventory of the collection. This is a rare legacy that our relatives have left, and you can help to make it widely accessible. As far as we know, this is the first large-scale examination of the genealogical content of this material.

The fundraising is to cover the expenses of acquiring digitized copies of files from the collection, suitable for distributing to volunteer transcribers. Files are being ordered in small groups, as funding permits, the first group consisting of the following:

Group 1
Da/2056Altschottlandcemetery register1720‑1874232 pagesHebrew, Germanmicrofilmed because of condition and ageneeds proofreading
Da/754Altschottlandbirth register1838‑184610 pages in a large formatGermanxeroxedindexed and online
Da/862Langfuhrlist of members of Chevra Kadisha, minutes and accounts, deaths1765‑184950 pagesHebrewmicrofilmedneeds proofreading
Da/286Mattenbudenbirth, marriage, and death registers1832‑184620 pagesGermanmicrofilmedindexed and online
Da/305Mattenbudenmemorbuch1735‑188340 pagesHebrew, Germanxeroxedneeds proofreading
Da/1598Weinberglist of members1817‑1881about 52 pages in a very large formatGermanxeroxedindexed and online
Da/685Breitgassememorbuch1821‑1903about 10 pagesHebrewxeroxedindexed and online

The brief descriptions and date ranges above are based on the genealogical content our transcribers observed, sometimes significantly better than indicated in the CAHJP's online inventory. Note that all five of the communities are represented in this first group of CAHJP files. This should help researchers determine to which of the communities their relatives belonged. The $438 we raised is a small price to pay for re-opening the book closed on the Danzig community more than 65 years ago.

The process of selecting files for the second group is underway. You can assist if you are able to visit the CAHJP in Jerusalem. Contact the Project Coordinator for more information.

Please give generously towards this project, according to your means and interest in Danzig Jewish genealogy and history. Please keep in mind that your generous donations might help those with more limited financial means benefit from this material, too. This project can proceed only if it continues to be funded, unlike our complementary FHL microfilm indexing project, which does not require any funding.
