JewishGen Danzig/Gdańsk SIG Presents:

Surnames Derived from the City of Danzig
by Alexander Beider
Alexander Beider, expert Jewish onomastician, has graciously provided us with the following information about surnames derived from the city of Danzig, as found in his books, A Dictionary of Jewish Surnames from the Russian Empire (1993), A Dictionary of Jewish Surnames from the Kingdom of Poland (1996), and A Dictionary of Jewish Surnames from Galicia (2004), all published by Avotaynu, Inc. Listed are the surnames and indications of their geographic distribution. It cannot necessarily be inferred that these surnames were chosen because a member of the family was a resident in Danzig. It might be that the surnames were chosen because of business dealings with Danzig or for other reasons. Any evidence linking bearers to the city of Danzig would be appreciated.
