Derechiner Benevolent Association

1960's Dues Book

Contributed by Jerry Seligsohn

It is seldom that YIVO receives landsmanshaft records from the earlier years of a society from the New York State Department of Insurance after these societies have undergone the process of dissolution. Most dissolution collections have discarded many of their earlier records so we rarely see sick benefits and payment to society doctors. With the advent of medical insurance and Medicare most landsmanshaften limited their principal activity to that of a burial society. Therefore it was with great surprise that I saw minutes kept in Yiddish as well as earlier financial records. Minutes deal with bread and butter issues [dues, payments for illness, burials, etc] whether kept in English or in Yiddish. They are full of Yinglish and often betray the lack of Jewish education of the secretary. We often find Yiddish transliterated into Roman characters "de member hat gesagt" [though not in this collection]. The Yiddish actors union kept their Yiddish minutes in Roman characters. A rare find in this collection were gorgeously printed Yahrzeit sheets on which scribes wrote out the names of the deceased in beautifully done Hebrew characters. Though nothing like the historical Yizkor books we have become accustomed to these have a charm of their own.. Since the names are written down in Hebrew script and the dates in the same script but in the Jewish calendar these might serve as a useful genealogical tool as they deal with very much older members.
