Seeking information about a relative killed in the Holocaust 3 #belarus
I have available to me a family tree drawn up by a cousin of mine many years ago. One of the entries is for a cousin who was “killed by Hitler” and who was married to a “lady rabbi.” I believe that this cousin lived in Yakovlevo (current Belarus). My understanding is that the Jews in this area were sent to the Drohitchen ghetto. I have tried to obtain information about him but to no avail. Also I didn’t think that there were “lady rabbis” at that time.” I would be interested in learning about how I could find out information about him. Does anyone know if there were female rabbis during that time? Thank you. Alice Greenburg Forsythe Boise, Idaho

1950 US Census - separate rooms! #records #usa
Dear Genners, While chasing down a couple in the 1950 US Census, I found them living at the Hotel Walton in Manhattan, New York. It took me a moment to understand the numbering system, because the first column included both the street number followed by the hotel room number. At the top of the page, the enumerator had written for another couple "Married but have separate rooms in [the] hotel (1107-–701). I think this is a first for me in many years of genealogical research. Enjoy! searching for a relatives's family who immigrated from Poland to Brazil sometime before WWII. #translation
I am new to online JewishGen, used to get the magazine 20 years ago. My family from Kalischen, Poland, named David Kreitman, immigrated sometime in the 1900, the 20's or 30's. I know a sistger did immigrate to America and settled in Charleston, SC. A brother stayed and survived the holocaust and remarried a woman and had a child in a DP camp in ?Germany named Haya Kretiman. They moved to Israel. The reason I am researching this is I plan to be in Brazil later in this year of 2024. I saw a reference to a Brazilian immigrant data base in an earlier group discussion. If i do get some records can anyone help to translate? Eleanor Edelstein

Ancestral Origins and Genetic Diversity of Moroccan Jews #sephardic
Jews have been present in North Africa for more than 2,000 years. Moroccan Jewish oral tradition claims that they originated in the Holy Land. Some European historians and travellers of the 19th and early 20th centuries thought that they were mostly natives – Berbers – who converted to Judaism. Another hypothesis is that part of Morocco's Berber population descends from former Jews who converted to Islam. Some of the Moroccan Jews, the Toshavim, have been living in Morocco since ancient times, others, the Megorashim, came to Morocco after having been expelled from the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the 15th century. What are the ancestral origins of Moroccan Jews? The study on the Y chromosome of nearly 250 Moroccan Jewish men carried out as part of the Avotaynu DNA project will try to answer this question. It will be supported by an empirical comparison of the ethnic origins of Moroccan Jews and those of Ashkenazim and non-Jews from Morocco. Raquel Levy-Toledano is a French MD, PhD, Sephardic Jew, born in Morocco and very much involved in research on Moroccan Jewish genealogy. She is a board member of the Cercle de Généalogie Juive where she leads the North African group, a co-administrator of Avotaynu DNA, the founder of a genealogy society, NAJMA (Nos Ancêtres Juifs Marocains et Algériens) and of the Généalogie des Juifs Marocains Group on Facebook, and a volunteer curator at Geni.com. Because there are few sources and documents on Moroccan Jews, to promote Moroccan Jewish genealogy, she set up a Facebook group encouraging the close to 10,000 members to built their tree and to collaborate on Geni. This allowed the group to build a tree of more than 350,000 profiles on Geni. SZTAYNBERG - Research in Belgium, Brussels-Forest #poland
Dear All, I'm helping a family to search about their past in Belgium. The SZTAYNBERG family came from Poland to Belgium and we got 2 quite large files from the Belgium archive for SZTAYNBERG as foreigners. The 74 pages contain information about the parents, addresses, working place and more. They lived in Brussels-Forest. Their only child was Isaac Mejer born 1925 in Radomsk, Poland, they arrived in Belgium in 1927 and based on the documents went to Switzerland in 1943, came back and immigrated to Israel in 1945. We are asking if there are any databases to look for any evidence of the child studies/schools, groups outside of school etc. Appreciate any lead or advice. Thx Zvika Oren Israel

Genealogist Recommendation #ukraine
Hi all, I’ve been working periodically with a Ukrainian genealogist named Alex Belous since before the war. Over the years, we have also become friends, and he recently launched a website, so I just wanted to put in a plug for him. He is smart, diligent, trustworthy and knowledgeable about genealogy. He is also fluent in Ukrainian, Russian, English, German and Polish, and his fees are affordable. Like many Ukrainians, his life has been adversely impacted by the war, which forced him to move from Kharkiv (city) to Kharkiv Oblast. But he has the experience and know-how to help you find your ancestors and if you’re looking for genealogical, DNA or long-form translation help, he’s a lovely person and worth talking to. If you’re interested in exploring his services, his website is ukrainegen.com, and he can be reached through there. Lydia Zabarsky New York

MNJGS hosts Jennifer Mendelsohn on Sun. May 19, 1PM Central, speaking on "Reunited and It Feels So Good" #announcements #dna #holocaust
A 95-year-old Holocaust survivor whose entire family was lost learns she has three living first cousins. A Holocaust orphan lives her entire life without knowing her true identity. Four years after her death, the woman's daughter is finally reunited with her biological family thanks to a DNA test. A child survivor of Theresienstadt finally learns the identity of his unknown father. This talk will detail some of the amazing and unexpected Holocaust reunions Jennifer Mendelsohn has helped orchestrate through a blend of dogged paper trail research and careful DNA analysis. In 2022, Mendelsohn co-founded the DNA Reunion Project at the Center for Jewish History, a first-of-its kind effort to provide free DNA testing to Holocaust survivors and their children. Now called "The Holocaust Reunion Project," this project has tested over 1000 survivors and enabled scores of successful connections. In this presentation, Mendelsohn shows how genetic genealogy can benefit the Holocaust survivor community, with examples of how DNA has provided closure and led to heartwarming reunions. Jennifer Mendelsohn is a sought-after genealogist who specializes in helping Eastern European Jewish families shattered by the Holocaust reclaim their history. Her journey began in 2013, when she reunited her husband's grandmother—a Polish Holocaust survivor who had lost her entire immediate family and most of her extended family—with three living first cousins she had never known. Since then, she has worked on scores of cases, solving complex family mysteries using a blend of traditional and genetic genealogy. Her sleuthing was featured in the 2019 bestseller Inheritance by Dani Shapiro. In 2022, she co-founded the DNA Reunion Project at the Center for Jewish History, which seeks to promote DNA testing as a tool for helping Holocaust survivors find family. Mendelsohn is also known for the innovative use of genealogy as a tool for activism. She created the viral hashtag #resistancegenealogy, which uses genealogical and historical records to fight disinformation and honor America’s immigrant past. The project received international media attention, including being featured on CNN.com, The New Yorker, The Washington Post and Yahoo News. A native Long Islander now based in Baltimore, Mendelsohn serves on the board of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Maryland and is the administrator of Facebook's Jewish Genetic Genealogy group, with over 10,000 members worldwide. Prior to her work as a genealogist, Jennifer spent many years as a freelance journalist. Her work has appeared in countless publications including People, Slate, The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Los Angeles Times, Time, and Tablet. In addition, she is the author of a children's book and helped fashion guru Carson Kressley pen his New York Times best-selling mens' style manual Off the Cuff. I'm seeking for research purposes descendants of Fischel (or Fishel) Perelman or perhaps Perlman. Born in Brest-Litovsk (possibly in 1918) to Manes, in 1947 he was living in Minsk. His father Manes perished in the holocaust as well as his sister Sara and some of her family who were living in Brest. There were two other siblings. one had no children, the other - apart from a birth certificate no info is known about him. Any info about him or his descendants are welcome.
